Plastic straws are not recyclable, are slow to decompose, and often end up as debris in our oceans.

In 2013, plastic straws and stirrers were the 5th most common item found on coasts in Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day, with over 555,000 removed from beaches. Think about that the next time you get your iced coffee, smoothie, or even water at a restaurant.

COARE believes small efforts on everyone's part can help keep our oceans plastic-free. We're working with local establishments to only give out straws when customers ask, and to switch to compostable plastic. We're also reminding you, the customer, that you can play a part and make sustainable decisions! If you don't need a straw, speak up and tell your waiter, bartender, or barista. If you want a straw, there are great reusable or compostable options: pyrex-like glass (that won't shatter in your mouth!), stainless steel, or bamboo.

What you can do to help

  • When ordering drinks at a bar or restaurant, specifically request "No straw, please!".
  • Try a reusable straw! There are many great options made from bamboo, stainless steel, or durable glass, and they make great gifts for the iced-coffee lover in your life!
