Sharks have existed for 300 million years.

It took us eight seconds to decide to protect them.

While diving in 2006, Christopher Chin locked eyes with a shark for eight seconds. He knows this because he was filming it as it peacefully glided past him. In that unforgettable moment, he realized the shark was an intelligent, sentient animal. One that deserved to be respected and protected. Coare was born out of Christopher’s commitment to take action to protect sharks.

Authoring environmental policies centered on shark protection, Coare effectively legislated them at the state level. Over time, Coare evolved into a trusted ocean conservation organization and policy leader. Other environmental policy makers and policy advocates and the United Nations began to take notice.

Committing itself to inclusive collaboration, listening to all stakeholders, and understanding varying viewpoints, Coare realized it could effectively achieve its mission through diplomacy. In addition to global policies that protect sharks, Coare drives global influence around plastic pollution and environmental policy with expertise that's respected and trusted.

With an endless love of scuba diving, Coare supports divers and the dive community who are vested in supporting a healthy ocean and improving their bottom line. Coare’s Green Divers for Blue Oceans® Program elevates environmental dive practices for long term sustainability by providing thought leadership and plastic pollution expertise.

Founded in 2006, Coare is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
