- California Bag Ban

Hello fellow ocean lovers!

As we reported last month, the California Legislature approved Senate Bill 270, which will phase out single-use plastic bags in California grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, and pharmacies.

127 cities and counties in Califoria have already enacted similar or stronger legislation, covering one-third of California's population.

We're thrilled to report that just this past Tuesday, at 10:04am PDT, Governor Jerry Brown signed this landmark bill into law, making California the first in the nation to enact a statewide ban of single-use plastic bags.

Wow, talk about making waves and creating change. This is truly a momentous occasion in history and is something that will be talked about for years to come. COARE was there from the beginning, thanks to support from you and thousands of other activists and colleagues.

Here at COARE, we are overjoyed. As most of you know, the reduction of single-use plastics is a key focus of ours, and is something we have been addressing since our inception.

We have been working on this issue at the local and state levels for several years, and it has been a long battle against big plastic, and we're thrilled that our integrity and perseverance has allowed us to once again be part of such significant and precedent setting change.

This isn't just great news for California; it's great news for us all! Sometimes the first step is one of the hardest, and this helps set the stage for many more similar acts. California is the first state in the U.S., but it will not be the last. We're excited about the future!

We could not have done this without your support, though. Whether you made a contribution, volunteered for us, made phone calls, or simply reposted a timely call-to-action, you can also be proud to have helped take part.

If victories like these are important to you, please consider donating to COARE today. Every penny of your contribution will go towards our programs:
