COARE is proud to have co-authored a "thought starter" document outlining a multi-layered approach to a global convention ("international treaty") to address the epidemic of plastic pollution.

This document and concept were originally presented at the Second Meeting of the Ad-hoc Open Ended Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics in Geneva in December, and paved the way for further discussion at the UN Environment Assembly which took place 11-15 March 2019.

We worked in close collaboration with numerous countries and Intergovernmental Organizations to discuss possible frameworks for conprehensive life-cycle approach solutions to the epidemic of plastic pollution. Progress was hindered by industy interests, but it was not entirely derailed. Our work will continue as active participants in the Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics, and we look forward to continuing to shed light on the problem all around us.
